Clueless

When thinking and planning about my blog I decided I wanted the film ‘Clueless’ to be the subject of my first post.  Why? One might ask ‘that is so 13 years ago!’ Exactly that is why I wanted to write about it.  I first watched the film at 13; back then 13 year olds, or at least the ones in my school, where fairly innocent and impressionable.  I would obviously never never ever admit this at the time but that film changed the world as I knew it forever.  I loved everything about Cher (the main character), she was beautiful and her house was beautiful, her room, her friends, her high school, her car, her lifestyle, and above all her wardrobe were beautiful.  Her life was my dream, she became my role model… only now can I shamefully admit this.

As pathetic as it may sound this is the film that introduced me to film and fashion or better said fashion in film.  This is where my love for this subject began.  Then again at age 13 what was not there to love about the film?  It starred good-looking teenagers, colourful sets and clothes, a simple and cute story line, it was like watching Barbie’s life only better.

I haven’t watched the whole film in a while but the thought of it always makes me smile, it meant a lot to me.   Back then my friends and I were so obsessed with it that we even adopted their form of speech at first as a joke but words and expressions like ‘whatever’, ‘as if’ and ‘loser’ soon became part of our vocabulary and to this day every so often I hear people use them and inevitably I think of the film.  Of course the way they dressed affected our wardrobe choices back then as well. And it was not till I went to study fashion 5 years later that I learnt that the film aided the birth of a fashion movement in the 90s thereby proving once again how interlinked fashion and films are. I leave you with an image of one of my favourite parts of Cher’s life her clothes…
