I have always been fascinated by Cleopatra, the myth that surrounds her and the art and culture of ancient Egypt. I love how this era has been reinterpreted and influenced film and fashion a number of times in the last century.
Almost two years ago in September 2008 at London Fashion Week the work of an accessories' designer caught my attention for what I thought was Egyptian influenced jewellery. Her name is Fiona Paxton and even though ancient Egypt is not one her influences, in fact her website says it is: 'Indian artisanship with the iconography of the British punk era she grew up in, conceptual Japanese fashion of the 80s and the German Bauhaus movement.' The geometric shapes and colours take me back to my history lessons at age 9 where I daydreamed of being Cleopatra in a past life! Anyway this designer's work has come a long way since 2008 and seems to be a favourite of British fashion media. Images of some of her pieces and Drew Barrymore's styling of a Paxton piece posted here for you to admire.
